While Schaumburg officials still plan to relocate their nursing and senior services division next summer, its destination now appears to be the northwest corner of Plum Grove and Schaumburg roads rather than Town Square at the southwest corner of Roselle and Schaumburg roads.

Village officials hope to sign a lease next month for two adjacent storefronts totaling 3,654 square feet in the Market Square shopping center. The storefronts previously housed a dry cleaners and a judo school.

If the lease is signed, the nursing division would move there in midsummer from the approximately 70-year-old Slingerland House at 521 E. Schaumburg Road on the village’s municipal campus.

Schaumburg acquired the single-family home in 1989 and made it the nursing division’s headquarters in 1995. But after the building was deemed inadequate for current needs barring a $ 375,000 remodel, the village decided to demolish it no later than April 2019.

When trustees voted last July to relocate the division, it seemed that two vacancies at Town Square were strong possibilities. Both were taken by other tenants before the village could sign a lease.

The conveniences of Market Square for the division’s clientele are virtually equal to those of Town Square, Schaumburg Community Services Director Kathleen Tempesta said.

While Town Square boasted proximity to the Schaumburg Township District Library and other services, the Walgreens at Market Square is a major draw, she said.

The former dry cleaners space at Market Square will house the division’s medical equipment loan closet, while offices, consultation spaces and meetings rooms would be in the old judo studio.

The division provides health services and loans certain kinds of medical equipment to seniors and people with disabilities in the village.

Village officials are negotiating an initial lease of just over five years for the two storefronts, Tempesta said.
