PUTNAM COUNTY — Has a hospital stay, recent injury or just coming of age as a senior presented a need for medical equipment? If so, the Putnam County Council on Aging, an United Way of Putnam County Partner Agency, has a Medical Equipment Loan Closet with an assortment of new and used durable medical equipment on hand to lend to those in need for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months at no charge. The only eligibility is that you must be a Putnam County resident, age 60 and better. Example of items available for loan include: wheelchairs, walkers, canes, grabbers, tub chairs/benches, raised toilet seats, commodes, grab bars, sock aides, shoe horns, dressing sticks, incontinence products, nutritional supplements, and other miscellaneous items.

If you are in need of medical equipment and would like to arrange to borrow equipment from the Loan Closet, please call the Council on Aging Outreach Specialist, Judy Kahle at 419-523-4121. Mrs. Kahle will meet with you to assess your needs, see if the item is available in the Loan Closet, complete required paperwork, and arrange for pick-up of the medical equipment. Most medical equipment can be loaned for six months with the option to extend the loan if needed. However, there is an exception on wheelchair loans. All wheelchairs can be loaned for a maximum of six weeks.

In order to keep the Loan Closet full, the Council on Aging relies on generous donations from the community. The supply of items constantly changes depending on the needs of older adults as well as donations received. The Council will accept most small medical equipment, as long as it is in good repair. All donated items will be inspected to insure they are in good working order before being accepted for the Loan Closet. The Council will not be able to accept large medical equipment nor cloth items.

For more information on the Medical Equipment Loan Closet, please call the Council on Aging Outreach Specialist, Judy Kahle, at 419-523-4121.
